President Hinckley

Yesterday President Hinckley passed away. I found out last night around 7:45. It was hard for me – a really sombering thing, but at the same time it was a happy thing. He’s with his wife now. He isn’t suffering, and what a grand and glorious reunion he must have had with all the people he’s affected. I just wanted to write down a few of the memories I have from President Hinckley:

I remember a few years back when I was probably a teacher; he prayed for us. we had a special youth fireside and he introduced the 6 B’s. Then he took the last 15-20 minutes and he prayed for us. I can’t remember anything in particular that he said, but I remember how I felt. I was really grateful/happy to hear a prophet of the Lord pray for me.

When I think of President Hinckley I can just see him shaking his cane, ‘knighting’ President Eyring, and just smiling. He was always so happy. I’m sure he heard about all sorts of bad things that were going on, I’m sure he was intimately aware of all the people doing wrong, and yet, he was happy. It seems to me his theme was: “Don’t worry, it will all work out. Just do a little bit better.” I love that he was always asking us to do just a little bit better. He was optimistic – he knew that we could do it and he inspired that optimism in me.

President Hinckly dedicated the Philippines for missionary work and his prayer is very special to me. He promised the saints there that if they would keep the commandments and pay their tithing they would have: rice in their bowls, a roof over their heads, and clothing on their backs. I saw this promise fulfilled many many times.

President Hinckley had the ability to lead everyone, and at the same time he knew how to work one on one. Everyone I have ever met who has met him has said the same thing. He loved
